Although I disagree with his proposals for our health care system, I believe that Senator McCain and Governor Palin are much closer to and far more in tune with “The Common Good,” than are Senators Obama and Biden. I think that a McCain/Palin administration will have a fundamental sense of what is just, what is right as a significant guide for how they operate; whereas, for the democrats, I believe these concepts are simply spins of rhetoric through which they believe they can get elected. I do not believe true substance exists in either Senator Obama or Senator Biden.
That’s a very pessimistic assesssment by R.Garth Kirkwood.
He is perhaps reponding to the comments early in the interview where the subject was recalling the old days, when politicians celebrated their working class roots and stood with working people during far tougher times physically than in our era, rather than deny this proud heritage, for shame.
But I think the chap, who reminds me of that bloke who gave the South’s side of the American Civil War on the Ken Burns series, would rather see renewed engagement a la the early ’sixties, even if much failure is probably inevitable.
Ok, so the system is vast, complex and above all, “there”. And only a fool doesn’t look after number one and nearest and dearest.
It’s still no excuse for defeatism.or failing tolook for avenues of cooperation for the betterment of society and its people.
The idea that left and conservative cannot relate at least a bit at the level of the importance of the community and community values ahead of crass, immature self absorption and materialism, is one that could be challenged, for a start.
I am responding to a gut feeling about Senator Obama and Senator Biden.
I do not believe that the leaders of the left have shown the ability to relate at the level of the importance of the community and community values. I believe that Senator McCain and Governor Palin are so far ahead of Rep. Pelosi, Rep. Frank, Senator Reid, Senator Dodd, Senator Biden, and Senator Obama in that regard that the latters’ politically correct spin can be seen for exactly what it is: crass, immature self absorption and materialism.
Strange times when the righties have inherited the mantle of the left.
No, I think globalisation has shattered social formations ability to protect themselves. Yet even this should be seen as a realist reading rather than a moralist attack on capitalism.
Who walks past a twenty dollar note lying on the footpath and fails to pick it up?
Yet the people must forever renegotiate with the powers, regardless of the guise they are adopting at a given moment, or risk losing the chance of giving their kids the life they have had.
Let’s not be too critical of the Democrats- Biden made it explicit that he and Obama sort to represent the Middle classes, replacing the GOP. All we have to decide is, if this means also at the expense of everyone else.
They represent no threat to the system accept in the maintainance of bad as well as good facets of it.
The “two right factions of a single party state” is reductionist and sour but still contains a lot of truth; societies can get worse as well as better,or vice versa. Caroline noted this elsewhere, as to Bush, and fears the new crowd are also opportunists devoid of consciousness and conscience, also. Only we havent had nearly a decade to assess them yet.
This is the stage where “plausible deniability” has turned around and bitten the GOP on the ass ( apart from those who got out while the going was still good ).
I think if you had more Americans that actually connected their own personal views with their political views inevitably you would wind up with small government conservatism.

Well, that was an interesting clip however, it doesn’t seem that really there’s a candidate for the working class this election.

“you would wind up with small government conservatism”
I’m not sure how well small government conservatism works with very large populations.
I like small government as much as the next person, but I think the reality of modern population densities doesn’t jive well with small government.
I also think many conservatives don’t understand this.

I think some of our large population centers are “artificially enhanced”.
