NEWS: Iraq and Iran Oil Each Other Up
Story: Iraq’s oil minister said that Iraq and Iran plan to develop oilfields that straddle their border and Iraq will pump crude to its Iran’s refineries, deepening the commercial ties between the two oil producers.
These two predominantly Shiite Muslim countries have been looking to strengthen ties, prompting concern among Iraq’s once dominant Sunni minority and other Arab states, as well as in the United States, which has 145,000 troops in Iraq.
QUESTION: Should the U.S. put a stop to this oil production arrangement given President Bush has made Iraq primary front on the War on Terror, considers Iran part of an “axis of evil”, and accuses them of meddling in Iraq?

How are we going to stop it? We don’t have enough troops to control the country much less any business in another country.
caroline,
That is the 64 million dollar question. I do think we need to seperate the three groups for peace. We also must make sure the oil is split evenly between all three groups. This would isolate the deal between the Shiites and Iran. Also the Shiites would have less to offer Iran as well as control because the Kurds and Sunnis would not go for the deal.
John and Caroline,
This story smells like … buffalo chips.
Iran has not built a new oil refinery since 1979. It does not have the ability to instantly increase refinery production.
Any increase in crude oil shipped to Iran would be shipped OUT of Iran as crude oil.
Iran is actually an importor of refined petroleum products.
