Supreme Court sends a signal – in English

Do you not agree “common tongue is the key to the American dream”?

WT-Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Horne v. Flores drives another nail into the coffin of bilingual education, the teaching theory in which immigrant children are segregated by language and taught primarily in their native language while being taught English on the side.

Bilingual education is a documented failure in school systems across the country, and the 5-4 decision, written by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., involving Arizona’s Nogales Unified School District emphasizes this failure with a stark conclusion: Teach English. Specifically, the high court recognizes the demonstrated effectiveness of structured English immersion (SEI) methods for teaching English language learners (ELL).

In 1992, some students and parents in the district sued the state, claiming it wasn’t taking “appropriate action” to overcome barriers to ELLs in schools. The state responded with English-immersion techniques. (Thomas Horne is the state school superintendent for public instruction.) Here’s what the high court concluded: “Research on ELL instruction indicates there is documented academic support for the view that SEI is significantly more effective than bilingual education. Findings of the Arizona Department of Education in 2004 strongly support this conclusion.”

The scary thing is the 5-4 vote, same score as in the case where the racist nominee was overturned…again.

Four years of Obama could have long term consequences…But John wants him to succeed because if you don’t, you hate America.

Do you hate english as the language of America?

Unlike you I originally supported the bill and spoke out about the issue early and often. As I have said numerous times on the blog I have a difference in policy with many issues with Obama, yet unlike you I do wish for the best for our country over party loyalty.

    What bill?

I wish Obama fails miserably so that America will be the best it can be. That’s the difference John…you want him to succeed which will result in the demise of this great experiment.

I spoke out numerous times on panels and in public for support for English assimilation legislation.

What would call the Bush years that you supported and gave your heart and soul getting him elected?

If you encourage minorities to keep their native languages and even better… be dependent on something you do for them, you can keep them subservient…..

  9. bb says:

    John,

What would you call your decision to become irrelevant by not voting for anybody?

  10. Ga Patriot says:

This is not a relevant matter. No one without a command of English should be here except perhaps a handful of refugees. We need to get rid of all bilingual efforts. It is only Spanish being accommodated because of the millions here illegally. Enough.
