China balks at lead limits on kids’ jewelry
Do you agree with China that we should eliminate safety standards on toxic toys for kids? Does it bother you than China knowingly violates our laws at the expense of our children, and that our government does very little?
Do you agree with China that we should eliminate saftey standards for kids on toxic toys and only use a warning?
USATODAY-The Chinese government opposes a proposed U.S. standard limiting the amount of lead allowed in bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry sold for children.
CPSC says 20,000 children were treated in emergency rooms from 2000 to 2005 after swallowing jewelry. The number doesn’t include choking incidents. A 4-year-old boy died last year after swallowing a charm that was 99% lead.
CPSC is concerned that children can ingest unsafe levels of lead after putting necklaces and other jewelry in their mouths, even briefly. If they are also exposed to lead in their homes or drinking water, there can be a cumulative risk. Lead poisoning can lower the IQ, cause learning disabilities and lead to kidney or liver disease.
“It is absolutely imperative that all manufacturers understand that if they are going to sell products in the U.S., consumer protection has to be one of their main concerns,” she says.
In the comments, Guo LiSheng, a deputy director general in China’s Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, said the agency agrees with the U.S. that children’s health and safety need to be protected but believes putting warning labels on the jewelry “may be more efficient than setting the limit of lead content.”

Keep in mind, China has been TRYING to keeps is population down for some time. So things like this might not translate all that well into US culture.
It bothers me that you always want government to do what parents are supposed to do. You are a classic lib John, nothing can be done without some sort of government intervention.
When is the next John Edwards Meetup John? And will you provide the appetizers or does that also fall to government because one never knows when they might get sick from under-cooked food.
Bart you are saying the winning strategy for The NEW GOP is allowing China to sell poison and buyer beware?
No John, I’m saying parents need to be responsible for what their children eat. I know this goes against the liberal big nannyism you espouse, but when does it end?
Should government make sure every kid has a helmet on when riding a bicycle?
Should government ban soccer because more kids are injured annually in that sport than any other?
Should government get into your pantry to make sure you only feed your kid what it deems to be healthy?
Should government just raise every kid because parents just don’t have the skills necessary to handle such a daunting task?
Bart
This was POISON!
So is bug spray…do you want government to regulate where you store that?
Anti-Freeze also comes to mind.
When do you think parents have responsibility John?
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission, through its National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, estimated between 146 000 and 160 000 soccer-related injuries annually for the years 1992 through 1994. Approximately 85% of these injuries occurred in participants through 23 years of age, with approximately 45% occurring in participants younger than 15 years.
4,000 kids per year treated for lead poison.
57,375 kids per year treated for soccer injuries.
Better cut off all ties with China…they probably make the soccer balls.
Bart

I can read John.
If you are so concerned about lead poisoning that causes 4000 per year to be treated, then you should be just totally discombobulated about 57,375 soccer injuries annually (and those numbers are from 15 years ago, just imagine how many more occur today).
I can’t believe you are not calling for an immediate halt to all soccer ball imports from China because it is obvious the Chinese intentionally make the balls with the hope of harming American children.
Bart
You sound like someone who has never had kids!
WOW!
Bart- LOL!
I am all for parental responsibilty… but I just have to ask…are you okay with China importing the toothpaste with antifreeze in it too?
I would like to debate you on logic and reason.. but I hate to beat up on the un-armed….
John…
or at least someone who never SHOULD have kids…
yikes!
eeevil,
You are to logic and reason what the Clintons are to the sanctity of marriage.
I had a real nasty reply for the kids comment, but will let it go as I was raised semi-properly. If you can’t keep a kid from eating jewelry, then you should stick with raising hamsters. You big nanny folks are destroying America.
Bart
Bart you being a Rudy fan the marriage topic is tough!
Who said I was a Rudy fan? I haven’t even come close to deciding which GOPer I will support.
I do know which ones need to go back to being backbenchers though and your boy Ron Paul should be first out. He can take Tancredo, Brownback, Gilmore, T. Thompson and Hunter with him (you still haven’t answered the big question…Do you support building a fence using the same plan as the one in San Diego pushed by DHunter?).
Bart
Once we agree on the cost of welfare you support per immigrant I will answer the question!
That is the most illogical, non-answer yet. Why not just write, ‘once you agree with me on cost of welfare derived from errouneous data then manipulated to support a biased outcome, then I will tell you that I support a fence with more holes than a Dunkin Dounuts bakery.’
