Ann Coulter’s Pointed Remarks Draw Edwardses’ Pointed Reply
I do not support John Edwards, yet Ann Coulter went way over the line with her statements about the death of his 16-year-old son and suggesting Edwards should get killed in a terrorist attack.
What do you think?
NYT— Never mind Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Some days, it seems as if the presidential campaign of John Edwards considers his main rival to be Ann Coulter, the conservative writer.
Ms. Coulter has steadily targeted Mr. Edwards and other Democratic presidential candidates as she has toured the country promoting a book. And over the last two days, she has been the subject of pointed criticism by Mr. Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, who called in to a talk show where Ms. Coulter was appearing to ask her “politely to stop personal attacks.”
I do not support John Edwards, yet Ann Coulter went way over the line with her statements about the death of his 16-year-old son and hoping he got killed in Iraq. What do you think?Ms. Coulter’s most recent comments about Mr. Edwards came when she appeared to suggest that she hoped he would be killed in a terrorist attack. (To allay any suggestion that this might be considered tasteless, Ms. Coulter said she was merely reprising a similar remark that Bill Maher, the comedian, had made about Vice President Dick Cheney.) She had earlier accused Mr. Edwards of exploiting the death of his 16-year-old son in a car accident for his political advantage, and once used an anti-gay epithet to describe him during a speech.

If this is all Edwards is worried about, he should drop out of the race.
Great publicity stunt by the Edwards family to increase fundraising that lags behind the two dem frontrunners.
If people don’t like what Ann Coulter writes or says, then don’t read or listen to Ann Coulter…what a bunch of whiney little twits.
BTW John, here is the link so you can contribute to Edwards in his time of grief over remarks by a newspaper columnist. They actually sent it to their email database…you could learn about publicity stunts from the Edwards team for your next campaign.

Bart
I will pray for you!
I have to agree with bb on this one. I’m no fan of Coulter, but asking her to “stop being so mean” doesn’t help Edwards off-set his sort of “soft” demeanor.
(JohnKonop: Does this mean you’ll pray for me too?)
Though I’d rather he raise money that way than sell out to global elitists.
John, I would’nt waste your valuable time on white trash Anne Coulter…..Liberal Don
Lefthook
As far as Edwards comments that is his issue. I am just saying Coulter crossed the line!
No doubt. It’s who she is and what she does. The problem is fools like Matthews giving her airtime.
Why are conservatives so drawn to such venomous personalities?
Lefthook
The vulgar style sells with people on both sides. Hey Bart makes a living for awhile doing it! That is why I am serious when I say that I do pray for Bart!
Really. Who do you consider the liberal equivelent of Ann Coulter? Michael Moore? He has never used rhetoric like hers.
Al Sharpton!
Ha! The WORST Sharpton rhetoric doesn’t come anywhere near Coulter’s. And he certainly isn’t remotely as popular among liberals as Coulter is among conservatives.
Why anyone pays attention to what that retarded skank Coulter says is beyond me. But hey, she’s helping shrink the GOP base even further so I hope she keeps at it!
Come on riots, the Duke case….!
I think Ann’s pretty funny! But that is a little over the line. On the other hand look at this piece of crap pretty boy ambulence chaser running for president. Who are the morons voting for this clown? That’s way over the line for me.
And how come the left doesn’t get upset when Bill Maher wishes Cheney was assasinated in Afghanistan? In her own sarcastic way that is what she was getting at. I know the left is a little slow on the uptake. So I’ll explain it for you!!!
She demonstrates absurdity by being absurd and does quite well doing it.
John, you hired a consultant for your campaign who called your opponent a (rhymes with wussy) and other even more derogatory terms. Where do you get off questioning the extremely popular author for stating the obvious.
This was her actual remark:
COULTER: Oh yeah, I wouldn’t insult gays by comparing them to John Edwards. That would be mean. But about the same time — you know — Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack. So I’ve learned my lesson. If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.
jbtf,
Thanks for posting it in context…makes a tremendous difference.
John, why do you hate real conservatives like Ann Coulter, but tout RINOs like Lugar and Voinovich?
Bart
I have been outspoken about vulgar people like Al Sharpton, Ann Coulter and you.
BTW it is your GOD giving right to be vulgar in America!
FYI
Furious Ann Coulter Strikes Back
An obviously angry Ann Coulter this morning ripped into critics who deliberately distorted her comments about former senator and presidential hopeful John Edwards.
After a relentless 24-hour firestorm during which much of the mainstream media used selective quotes to mangle the meaning of several of Ann’s comments about Edwards, Coulter set the record straight while talking with Joe Scarborough host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program.
Coulter told Scarborough: “I’ve never seen people avoid ideas so much in such an obvious way and try to alert Americans not to read anything, not to listen to something someone said — not because of what someone is saying, but to try to portray her as a Nazi. This happens every time I put a book out and I’m getting a little bored with it . . .”
She further explained that she never wished John Edwards would die. She simply said on “Good Morning America” on June 25 that Bill Maher had wished the death of Vice President Cheney by terrorist attack and got away with it, so perhaps if she wanted to avoid criticism in the future while mentioning Edwards, she should say the same thing.
“Oh yeah, I wouldn’t insult gays by comparing them to John Edwards,” Coulter said on “Good Morning America.” “That would be mean. But about the same time — you know — Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack. So I’ve learned my lesson. If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”
The controversy over Coulter’s comments heated up when she appeared on Chris Matthews’ “Hardball” show the next day, and was blindsided by a phone call from Edward’s wife Elizabeth. Apparently, the call was pre-arranged by Matthews without Coulter’s knowledge.
Edwards’ wife told Matthews that she was very offended by Coulter’s interview on “Good Morning America” because Coulter said Edwards’ husband John should be killed by a terrorist attack.
Scarborough asked Coulter on his program, “Why would you say such an awful, awful thing about John Edwards?”
Coulter replied, “That is how it is being reported by the Associated Press, apparently all over NBC, except on your show . . . because liberals lie. I’ve written lots of books about it and this happens to be a good example of it.”
Explaining that the terrorist attack comment was in reference to a comment by Bill Maher about wishing Dick Cheney had been killed by terrorists Coulter said, “I described the entire Bill Maher scenario in one sentence. The ‘Good Morning America’ audience, which is pretty large and pretty broad, [got] the joke, and no one figured out a way to truncate that sentence until 36 hours later.
“It’s not like the liberal blogs weren’t, as they always do, watching my appearance and instantly posting, from the moment I walked off ‘Good Morning America,’ all of their indignation, which apparently centered on my comparing George Bush to FDR because he is great on foreign policy, lousy on domestic policy.
“Nobody even thought of how to lie about what I said for 36 hours, so don’t tell me I was giving them ammunition.”
The sanctimonious Mrs. Edwards is exposed, calls neighbor a “rabid, rabid republican” — This story also points out just what a pompous couple we have using Ann Coulter to try and raise money for a fledgling campaign.
Good riddance to arrogant, obnoxious, hypocrite, liberal rubbish!
RALEIGH –Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the “rabid, rabid Republican” who owns property across the street from her Orange County home — and she doesn’t want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.
Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way near his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.
“I wouldn’t be nice to him, anyway,” Edwards said in an interview. “I don’t want my kids anywhere near some guy who, when he doesn’t like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me.”
But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn’t have the proper approval.
“I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time,” Johnson said. “Sometimes you have to take drastic measures.”
Edwards views Johnson as a “rabid, rabid Republican” who refuses to clean up his “slummy” property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.
Johnson, 55, acknowledges his Republican roots. But he takes offense to the suggestion he has purposefully left his property, including an old garage he leases for use as a car shop, in dilapidated condition.
Johnson said he has lived his entire life on the property, which he said his family purchased before the Great Depression. He said he’s spent a lot of money to try and fix up the 42-acre tract.
“I have to budget. I have to live within my means,” Johnson said. “I don’t have millions of dollars to fix the place.”
Johnson, who has posted a “Go Rudy Giuliani 2008″ sign on a fence just 100 feet from the entrance to the Edwards’ driveway, has criticized Edwards for the scale of their nearby home. The property and home, which includes an indoor basketball court, an indoor handball court and an indoor pool, is valued at $5.3 million.
The Edwardses are still putting the final touches on the property, which they purchased in 2003.
“I thought he was supposed to be for the poor people,” Johnson said. “But does he ever socialize with any poor people? He doesn’t speak to me.”
Johnson said he has put his property on the market, in part blaming the high property taxes for his decision to leave. He also wants to move for another reason.
“I don’t want to live somewhere where someone’s always complaining about me,” he said.
I had to comment on this…..despite what any of you think, Ann Coulter is a Patriot of the first order. Her position on abortion couldn’t possibly be any more clear and she believes in the vision of the Founders.
The MSM CONSTANTLY quotes her out of context and you people swallow it hook, line and sinker. Sheesh….have you NEVER heard of “critical listening?”
As for those simply too dim-witted to “get” her humor, perhaps you should read any good book on sarcasm. If that doesn’t do it, try “It takes a village to raise a child.” That gave me a really good belly laugh!
John Konop for U.S. Senate – “The good times, they are a comin’”
I guess Elizabeth Edwards must have struck Coulter hard the way she’s screeching from that reply.
bb,
I’m glad to know that calling someone a Republican is considered a slur.
wow caroline, you prove Mac’s point right here on this thread by taking the Republican statement out of context…LOL!
Ann Coulter’s response — http://www.anncoulter.com/ –
Including this excerpt:
The usual nut Web sites (is Control Congress a “nut website” posted a zillion denunciations of my appearance on “Good Morning America” immediately after I appeared Monday morning. But it didn’t occur to any of them to simply lie about what I had said. No, it took them nearly 36 hours to concoct a version of that quote that included the Edwards part, but not the Maher part, or what English language speakers call: “the point.”
By tomorrow it will be: “Ann Coulter tried to kill John Edwards on ‘Good Morning America’!”
Good post Bart. I thought it might be helpful to point out the word “syllogism,” which is what Ann Coulter used.
Definition of Syllogism: (noun) a logical statement consisting of two premises and a conclusion, as “All men are humans, Jack is a man. Therefore Jack is human.
What Coulter did was to use a syllogism. When Bill Maher said he wanted Dick Cheney assassinated by terrorists, the MSM seemed to think that was fine and dandy. She said the same thing about Edwards, therefore the MSM should have treated it the same way it treated Maher. She was mistake in that belief becaus the MSM doesn’t understand the language of our Founders.
I guess this is, yet, another example of the MSM not understanding our native tongue. It couldn’t possibly be a case of bias against a conservative pundit could it?
John Konop for U.S. Senate – All good radio talk show hosts make good Senators, John is a radio Talk show host. Therefore, John will make a good Senator. See how easy it is?
While we disagree on other topics Mac, it is good to see that both of us have fine taste in women…Ann Coulter for Senator! — Time to shake things up with brutal honesty from the blonde bombshell tossing commentator.
Hey Bart – what about this one?…..
People who cross our borders uninvited have broken EXISTING, unenforced laws.
There are 12-20 million people who’ve crossed our borders uninvited.
Therefore: the 12-20 million have broken EXISTING, unenforced laws.
Here’s another:
Conservative women are “hot babes.”
eeevil is a Conservative woman.
Therefore, eevil is a “hot babe.” LOL! Love ya Sherri!
John Konop for U.S. Senate – Candidates who’ve lost in congressional races make excellent Senatorial candidates. John lost a congressional race. Therefore………..I think you get the picture.
Ooh Yeah, run Ann Coulter. Like I said, I hope she keeps talking. She’s helping shrink the already declinging Republican base. Anny the tranny for Senate! We love skanks! Those are some campaign slogans you guys can use. LOL.
Jealous caroline?
Ann Coulter says what many of the elected officials are too scared to say. John Edwards uses his son’s death in the campaign, Coulter calls him on it.
The reason you libs hate her is because she sees through all the “progressive” crap and makes millions writing books exposing the real intent of tree hugging lefties.
Way to go Caroline! That’s what I’m talking about! When you start losing the debate you start slinging names. Typical.
Bart – I think you have a point about the jealousy thing…..sounds to me like Caroline is a envious as it gets!
Give me a “hot” conservative babe anytime!
John Konop for U.S. Senate – We need real change in Washington!
FYI
Brownback writes of ‘hatred’ of Clintons
WASHINGTON – Sam Brownback says he harbored a “hatred” of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton until he experienced a religious awakening in the mid-1990s
Brownback, a Republican presidential hopeful, details in a new book how the change in outlook led him to make a stunning apology to Hillary Clinton a few years later during a Senate prayer breakfast.
“I was considering what I should say when I confronted all the anger that I held for the Clintons,” the Kansas senator writes in the book, “From Power to Purpose: A Remarkable Journey of Faith and Compassion.”
“I thought, I hate them for what they are doing to the country and I feel justified in hating them for it,” he writes.
But Brownback says he realized there is never justification for hating someone regardless of their actions.
He told the prayer breakfast audience that he used to have a “hatred for Bill and Hillary” because of their politics. He spotted Sen. Clinton in the crowd and, speaking directly to her, said he “realized that those thoughts of hatred were wrong. I apologized to her for them. I don’t know what she thought, but I believe it made a difference.”
Religion permeates nearly every corner of Brownback’s book, written with Jim Nelson Black and officially slated for release July 3. His soul searching began in 1995, hastened by two dramatic events in his personal life. His marriage was in real trouble — he was “on track” to getting divorced — as he devoted all his energy to the conservative agenda that fueled the Republican takeover of the House in 1994.
Even more traumatic was his 1995 bout with cancer and surgery to remove malignant melanoma from his right side. Brownback says he finally found peace when he resolved to devote himself to God.
“One night I got down on my knees and said ‘OK, Lord, that’s it. I give up. It’s all Yours,’” Brownback writes.
I don’t hate Coulter. Like I said, I hope you guys continue to cling to her. The smart Republicans are running from her. The dumb ones apparently love her.
As far as jealous, LOL. If you like heroin chic, she’s your gal.
Going by conservative standards of name calling, then Coulter loses every debate? You guys have more circular logic than a three ring circus and a lot of bozos on your team to put in them.
