Arrests of Immigrants With Criminal Records on the Rise

Obama tougher on immigration than Bush?

FOX- Immigration agents assigned to track down people who have ignored deportation orders have increasingly arrested immigrants with criminal records during the past year, new data show.

Data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement show a shift from the prior three years, when more than 70 percent of immigrants arrested by fugitive operations teams had no criminal histories.

About 45 percent of the 35,000 immigrants arrested by the teams during the 2009 fiscal year had criminal convictions. The figure is up from 23 percent during the prior year.

ICE has long claimed it focused on arresting immigrants with criminal convictions who ignored orders from immigration judges to leave the country.

But most people arrested had no criminal histories, which prompted outcries from immigrant rights groups.

ICE director John Morton said earlier this year the agency would focus on finding immigrants with criminal records or who have ignored deportation orders. However, he said other illegal immigrants would be arrested if they were present during the operations,

“The goal is to prevent crime rather than simply to respond to it,” ICE spokesman Brandon Alvarez-Montgomery said.

    John,

There you go again. Obsessing on Bush.
Hopefully the worn out public pressure to get serious about illegal immigration will not get politicized as you attempt. What is your message ?

I for one agree that Bush had an agenda regarding illegals – to open the borders and allow them to flood and destroy our jobs and economy. Appeasing big business was his top priority, which is why I didn’t vote for McCain either.

Bush allowed Ramos and Compean to go to jail for shooting an illegal drug dealer, and the whole thing was nothing but trumped up to discourage border patrol agents from doing their jobs.

Until I see employers taking the perp walk for their treasonous practices, I won’t believe Obama cares about the havoc wrecked upon our country by illegals. I do Medicaid audits, and you all have no idea what this is costing our country. Medical and dental.

    GP,

Agree Bush was bad (drive to any corner in Redville). Obama will make the situation much worse by finding ways to get them in the support systems & beholdin’ to Demos……

From your story John, “It’s unclear whether the Obama administration has shifted the program’s focus or whether agents in some regions have just been more successful at finding criminals, said Carl Bergquist, policy advocate for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles.”

If you would read the articles you post, you may avoid asking dumb questions.

    saltyd,
Unfortunately, they already get more in our support systems than most citizens, mainly because of identity issues and no one knows how much they make or what identity they are working under. The wives have different last names and leave the info blank as to the father. I know, I see the forms every day. If you have three kids in three years, shouldn’t you at least have the first name of the dad?

Granting them citizenship would be a way to both identify them and collect money. If the open borders groups had a clue as to how much they have been gaming the system, they wouldn’t be asking for the so-called pathway to citizenship. Even when they can’t find work, the children get free school, free food, free rent and a better life than where they came from.
