Burn, baby, burn: GOP contenders’ worry
Why do you think GOP contenders are having a hard time raising money for their run at the White House? Do you think the business interests are betting against the GOP? And what does that tell you about the differences between the front-runners from either party when the corporate donations move that easily from one side to another?
Politico….McCain isn’t the only candidate with burn rate issues. Mitt Romney managed to mask his by lending his campaign $6.5 million in the second quarter – a sum that accounts for nearly a third of the total cash he raised in the second quarter: $20.5 million. He loaned himself $2.4 million in the first quarter.
He ranks as the Republican presidential field’s top money raiser and spender, collecting $44 million from supporters since January and spending $32 million. Like McCain, he has opened offices outside the early-state perimeters, including in Michigan and Florida.
After spending about $4 million on television advertising, Romney’s average monthly burn rate for overhead expenses is running around $4.7 million. Only the candidate’s infusion of $9 million in personal loans prevented his campaign from reporting a second-quarter cash balance as strikingly low as McCain’s…….

All I know, John, is that if they hired me as their blogger all those business and special interest dollars would come pouring into their campaigns. Just like I am doing here for you, right?Just ask Al!
Of course, the only politician I could ever stomach working for is Ron Paul, and he is decidedly not attractive to special interests and big business, b/c he knows that the Constitution prohibits the dispensing of State favors to them – and Ron Paul follows the Constitution.
The GOP front runners are having a hard time raising money because they won’t disengage from Bush. I guess most people realize that the race for President is the Democratic Primary so that’s where they are putting their money.

What will the corporation get in return?
John,
Do you really think that the multinationals are the only ones giving to campaigns? LOL. Obama has the largest grassroot support in the nations history. All the Bush pioneers are giving to McCain. Perhaps you should ask his campaign that question.
Oh, and John, if you are really against that kind of stuff, you should advocate for public financing of all campaigns.

The big dollars come from corporations or them throwing arm twisting parties. You should be more concerned how Obama is selling out like all the rest!
John,
Why don’t you advocate for public financing of elections? I know, it’s because you really don’t care about the issue, it’s just something to sling around at candidates.
Typical conservative blather-candidates with lots of grassroot supporters are “selling out”. Well, can you make up your mind? Having grassroots support is good only as long as it’s Republics.
Caroline,
When I ran for office in public I proposed the following;
1) All candidates running for federal office must debate 4 times before and after the primary shown on PBS for free on TV and radio. The feed giving for free to commercial TV and radio if they want to play it.
2) Only 10% of money can be carried over per election cycle to break up war chest.
3) Eliminate the 1 million dollars in franking and that lawmakers use to promote themselves
4) Follow the Constitution and not allow unions, corporations and associations give money to candidates. Only American citizens!
John,
#4 was disallowed with campaign finance. Of course, conservatives overturned that and now they can donate. You are talking about Obama selling out because the majority of his campaign donors are grassroot supporters? You really don’t make any sense here.
PS. The Bush Pioneers were all American citizens so your proposal wouldn’t do anything to really affect the “elites” influencing elections. They are always going to have more money to donate to campaigns than the average citizen.
