Bush: Gonzales ‘has done nothing wrong’
After watching this testimony, how can President Bush still back Gonzales? Do you think Bush is backing him due to legal issues with wiretapping?
CNN-President Bush insisted on Monday that embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales still has his support and denounced Democratic plans for a no-confidence vote as “pure political theater.”
“He has done nothing wrong,” Bush said in an impassioned defense of his longtime friend and adviser during a news conference at his Texas ranch.
Despite Bush’s comments, support for Gonzales is eroding, even in the president’s own party. The Senate is prepared to hold a no-confidence vote, possibly by week’s end, and five Republican senators have joined many Democrats in calling for Gonzales’ resignation.
The attorney general is under investigation by Congress in last year’s firing of eight federal prosecutors.
The president told the Democrats to get back to more pressing matters.
“I stand by Al Gonzales, and I would hope that people would be more sober in how they address these important issues,” Bush said. “And they ought to get the job done of passing legislation, as opposed to figuring out how to be actors on the political theater stage.”

Of course he stands by Gonzales. Because to “Dubya” the Constitution is just a “G.D. piece of paper”.

I think Bush is backing him because he is loyal to Bush. Sad to see someone in this position not able to defend himself well and to come off looking pretty incompentent.

It is absolutely hilarious to see dems trash this guy after defending Janet Reno for 8 years. Gonzalez is not the best, most qualified for the position, but dem leaders made their bed with Reno who abused the office often to cover up Clinton misdeeds. Maybe it’s time to eliminate the office (or make it an elected position).

It’s the mob mentality in action. Bush was proud of Gonzo for not talking. That’s how simple all this is.
This is an authoritarian regime that considers itself answerable to no one, and the fact that Gonzo made himself look like an idiot for the sake of his boss is (to Bush) enough of a reason to back him 100%.
The facts in this case have nothing to do with why Bush says what he does. It is much more simple than that.

Bart,
I was no fan of Reno but she did not have her staff testify about here violating basic legal and ethical rights!

I’m still trying to decide whether Fredo is still AG because of what he could tell if Bush cut him loose, if Bush doesn’t want to submit a new AG nominee to the Senate because of the strings that might be tied to him (like upholding the Constitution), or because he really Fredo is doing what he should.
God help us if it’s the last reason.

Gonzo has done nothing wrong…
What has he done right?
Why are we talking about his failure to perform and if those failures mean termination?
Why aren’t we talking about what he has done right?
Could it be that he hasn’t done anything right?
