Bush Threatens to Veto Insurance Measure
Do you support increasing taxes on cigarettes to subsidize health insurance for children and some adults?
Townhall-President Bush on Wednesday reiterated his threat to veto Senate legislation that would substantially increase funds for children’s health insurance by levying a 61-cent-a-pack increase in the federal excise tax on cigarettes.
The tax increase would be used to subsidize health insurance for children and some adults with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid but not high enough to afford insurance on their own.

In typically lef-wing fashion, this is an attempt to socialize the Nation’s healthcare system on the backs of taxpayers.
These “sin” taxes really annoy me because if they put enough tax on something and consumers stop using it, the revenue stream dries up and some new tax is devised to replace it.
What about “parental responsibility” don’t these people understand? If you can afford to have children, you need to be able to care for them without gouging taxpayers.
This continual “nanny state” mentality will eventually bankrupt us and it flies in the face of everything the Founders intended.
Bart Brannon for U.S. Senate – It’s time for some fiscal discipline and tax reductions for John Q. Public!
It’s always for the children isn’t it? I was always under the impression that these revenues got thrown in with the rest, and then stirred up a bit and squeezed through a tube to make PORK SAUSAGE!!!
Instead of increasing taxes to pay for another failed program with massive abuse throughout, let’s do something really bold….END IT!
If parents cannot afford to provide healthcare for their offspring, then they shouldn’t have babies! What a concept.
This tax increase is reminiscent of Georgia’s last dem Governor, Sonny Perdue’s first act after assuming office; raise the sin taxes on tobacco and alcohol. Georgia Republicans lead by then State Rep. Lynn Westmoreland fought back and prevented some of the dem governor’s proposal, but we still got a relatively small tobacco tax increase. The same should happen in the U.S. Congress, but I bet SCHIP will get additional funding because (all together now) “it’s for the chilren” (Dr. Elder’s pronunciation).
It’s not for the chilren…it’s for irresponsible parents who have children they cannot afford to raise. This proposal would up the threshold to $80,000 income per family as a qualifier. Talk about expansion of welfare.
This will be a highlight of the Bush presidency if he sticks by his word to veto this tax increase.
Bart –
AMEN BROTHER!
Bart Brannon for U.S. Senate – It’s time for some fiscal discipline and personal responsibility!
You’re exactly right Mac. This is a thinly veiled attempt by Democrats to expand socialized health care. They will then use these numbers to demonstrate that in fact, the number of people on government health insurance has steadily increased so more fodder for nationalized government health care.
Hoads
You’re right. A little here, a little there, then all the sudden, WE NEED TO STREAMLINE THIS THING. Translation: income redistribution, socialism, ect…
