‘Carter is irrelevant,’ Bush administration!

Do you think President Carter is “irrelevant”?

CNN-The nasty words between President Bush and former President Jimmy Carter continued Sunday.

In a biting rebuke to Carter calling the Bush administration the “worst in history,” the White House on Sunday dismissed Carter as “increasingly irrelevant.”

Carter was quoted Saturday in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette as saying “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.”

The Georgia Democrat said Bush had overseen an “overt reversal of America’s basic values” as expressed by previous administrations, including that of his own father, former President George H.W. Bush.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto shot back Sunday from Crawford, Texas, where Bush spent the weekend.

  1. This is incredible. 6+ years in office, and there is chaos in the middle east…Palestine is in the midst of a civil war, while Israel is pounding away with rockets, after what they did to Lebanon…of course you have Iraq.

I suppose that as long as Bush being president equals more death and destruction than there was before he showed up, then I guess his influence is “relevant” by definition.

How a Nobel Peace Prize winning former president who has worked for just that, peace, in this region of the world could be called “irrelevant” by this crew…it’s a disgrace.

Bush has nothing but lip service for anything unpleasant that happens anywhere in the world. 1000 people could die all at once in Iraq today, and the guy would be saying the same thing over and over again. He’s got NOTHING to offer that will make the life of anyone living in that region better.

And that’s the ONLY result that really matters. Are the people better off than they were before you got the power?

I know that rich americans are, but brown people are screwed!

I would say that the GOP (or that part that wants to win) wishes for irrelevance for W!

  3. bb says:

Irrelevant is too nice a word for pnut boy.

There used to be an honorable practice of ex-presidents not publicly criticizing the current occupant of the most powerful office in the world. I think it shows a total lack of character for any ex-prez to do what Carter is doing…but it just proves what we have known since about 1978…Carter has no integrity or character. He is a pitiful old fart who by his own actions must be jealous of every other president who follows his one term debacle.

I no fan of Carter, but every now and then, even the often wrong can get it right. He certainly got it right in this case!

  5. Ken in TN says:

If Bush believes Carter to be irrelevant, he’s probably right. After all, Bush is an expert on the topic.

  6. Bill says:

Bush has broken a few taboos himself. The last thing I’m worried about these days is Jimmy Carter with an attitude.

  7. David O'Rear says:

Even if President Carter is “Irrelevant”, at least he isn’t a traitor!

    bb,

“Carter has no integrity or character.”

The tradition of former presidents letting their successors have a free run has two restraints:

it usually only applies to immediate successors; and

    it doesn’t cover treason.

  8. bb says:

    David,

Jimmy Carter long ago proved his allegiance to every country but America. Whether it was his butt kissing of N. Korean leaders or endorsement of Hugo Chavez’ corrupt election in Venezuela, Carter is a wreckless, failed ex-president. He is an old, jealous loser who but for the imagination of Ronald Reagan would have completely destroyed America. He has no right to criticize anybody.

  9. Ken in TN says:

Actually, bb, I think Carter is a great ex-president, maybe one of our best. It was being president that was a serious challenge for him.

And if you read Carter’s comment, it was related to this administration’s impact on our position in the world. It’s hard to dispute the fact that we are held in lower regard worldwide than ever before. Whether it’s the Iraq war, our overall disjointed policy and failures of diplomacy in the Middle East, our frictions with traditional Western European allies, the Wolfowitz fiasco or any number of other stumbles, our international standing is certainly at low ebb. In that respect, Carter was probably correct.

When countries like Iran, China and Russia can openly question our adherence to traditional American values over issues like torture, warrantless wiretapping, indefinite detention, use of secret evidence and other basic elements of the rule of law, you know we have surrendered the moral high ground.

  10. bb says:

    Ken,

Our ‘world standing’ was lower during the Reagan administration as he placed missiles throughout Europe (I remember vividly the reports from Germany where protests were a weekly event).

Where were we in ‘world standing’ as hostages were being held for hundreds of days while Carter fought off vicious rabbits while fishing?

Who cares what Iran, China and Russia think of our adherence to American values? None of those countries lost 3000 people in a terrorist attack. Our American values are fine (how many people are clamoring to get into those three countries)?

  11. David O'Rear says:

    bb,
    You are a disgrace.
You’re also an ignorant, partisan disgrace.

    Remember SALT II?

    Remember the Camp David Accords?

Or, can you only remember rabbits?

    Disgraceful.

  12. JohnKonop says:

    Bart,

You are getting hit from the left and the right WOW!

  13. JohnKonop says:

    Bart,

BTW you and David do agree on immigration and trade!

Does that make you a Democrat or David a Republican?

  14. JohnKonop says:

    David

Bart could help you in China!

  15. bb says:

    David,

Sorry to point out the truth…Carter sucked as president, sucks as an ex-president and should stick to wrestling vicious rabbits instead of removing any remaining doubt that he is an ignorant old fart!

  16. David O'Rear says:

    bb,

    Disgraceful.

  17. WhyWhyWicki says:

Jimmy and W. are not no good no more.

At least Carter is not a draft-dodger.
