Competition in the Cornfields

Do you think Iowa will push Obama and Romney to the top as front runners?

NW-Sen. Hillary Clinton holds a double-digit lead over her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination in many national polls. But in Iowa, home to the January 2008 caucus that is the first major event of the electoral season, the Democratic race is much tighter, according to the latest NEWSWEEK Poll. Among all Iowa Democrats surveyed, Clinton enjoys a 6-point lead over her nearest rival, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. But among likely Democratic caucus-goers, she is locked in a three-way race with Obama and former North Carolina senator John Edwards, with Obama enjoying a slight edge.

Meanwhile, the NEWSWEEK Poll found that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has emerged as the top choice among Iowa’s GOP voters—well ahead of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who leads in most national polls. But Romney’s religious beliefs could pose a problem; less than half of all Republicans in the state (45 percent) think the country is ready to elect a Mormon president (35 percent do not).

When you combine the ABH vote (anyone but Hillary), the enthusiastic grassroots support of Ron Paul, the anti-war vote, and the fact that RP has a lot of what cultural conservatives want, even if he’s still not as well known as Hillary Ron Paul could beat her in Iowa. This is of course including the large number of people who call themselves independents. Of course this doesn’t sit well with the “control freaks” who would rather loose than change the formula of the Republican party.
