Conservative Group Charges Media Exploiting Foley Case

imdb.com reports:

The Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog…has accused the major television networks of using a “double standard when reporting the sexual proclivities of Republicans versus Democrats.” …the MRC observed that while the morning and evening news shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC devoted 150 stories on Republican Foley over 12 days, the same programs referred to the scandal involving Democratic Congressman Mel Reynolds 19 times over an entire year. Reynolds was convicted in 1995 for having had sex with a 16-year-old campaign worker.

“…If this isn’t evidence of a liberal media agenda, nothing ever will be”. Many of the reports involving the Foley matter have focused on alleged efforts by the Republican leadership to cover up the Congressman’s misbehavior, an issue that did not arise during the Reynolds scandal.

Wah wah wah. It’s pathetic to watch attack dogs whine and stomp their feet like spoiled children. They can dish it out but they can’t take it. I seem to remember a bit of TV coverage regarding the “sexual proclivities” of a certain Democratic president. The Godfather and I have some advice: Act like a man ! !

Of course, conservatives have only themselves to blame. The media wouldn’t be focusing on a leadership coverup if there wasn’t one. And homosexuality wouldn’t be such a ratings bonanza if conservatives didn’t demonize it 24-7.

Can anybody make a case that the media is acting on a liberal bias in covering a gay-congressmen-hits-on-underage-pages sex scandal weeks before a close election?

I’m tired of these “black helicopter” types and their idiocy.

Don’t you know that gays run the media! /snark

  2. James says:

I think Foley was used by special interests to discredit the republicn party right before the election. They supported him to get into office and the HRC funded him. Special interst groups then applied pressure to out him in order to gain the support of a homosexual that won as a republican. They pressured for a decade to get him to go public with his sexual orientation and when he wouldn’t they used him to their advantage in the only way possible, by outing him in the most spectacular way they could.

The media is covering it because scandals are good for ratings. Inflating issues is good for advertising revenue. The proximity of this scandal to an election is well planned.

You can see in the way that he relates to the special interest group in 2003 that his role in their agenda was tortured and his own positions on their interests was confused as best.

    James,

If Foley was not so good at raising money would the Party had gotten rid of him?

  4. caroline says:

    James,
Are you aware that presidential advisor Karl Rove knew what Foley was doing and told him that if he didn’t stay in congress that he would make sure he didn’t get a lobbying job? The GOP knew about Foley for 11 years. As far as I know, Foley never got any money from the HRC. Can you back that up with facts and not rumors? Are you aware that many of the positions in the GOP are held by Gay people? Did you know that Hasterts Chief of Staff, Scott Palmer, is gay and lives with Hastert?

  5. September says:

    James,
If you think the scandal was planned, then why did key Republicans and Dems cover it up when Foley’s own chief of staff went to Hassert’s office 3 years ago.

I agree, 3 years ago was very well orchestrated for the upcoming election! HOW BRILLIANT!

  6. Bill says:

I’ve been reading about Hastert. My only problem is with the closet gay social conservative Republicans in office. Because when that’s the case somebody’s got his “2 party system” in a piano wire noose. Carl Rove is probably on the other end with a fishing rod yanking it back and forth and reelin ‘em in. The man George Bush calls “turd blossom”.

  7. James says:

Foley, Mark (R-FL)2005-2006 PAC Contributions HRC

I invite you to go back a year and see the Log Cabin Republican’s contributions too.

I dunno, it does seem a little far fetched to suppose that he was some kind of plant to fulfill just this purpose. If I wear my tinfoil hat for just a moment though, I can see how he was useful for this purpose right at this moment and was conveniently exploitable.

  8. Bill says:

So is Hastert in the closet?
If so let’s throw up some links.

  9. James says:

    I don’t think so…

  10. caroline says:

    Bill,
I don’t know whether Hastert is in the closet or not. The point is that apparently demagoging gays is for public consumption only? It seems that their actions say one thing and their words say another.

  11. Name Withheld says:

Scott Palmer is openly gay, and actually lives with Hastert in a townhouse on Capitol Hill. In fact, the pair are known for being extremely, unusually close for a member of Congress and a chief of staff. They are said to spend all their free time together, which is generally unheard of, since both members and their senior staff generally spend most of their time with their own families. And remember, Hastert was a high school wrestling coach — that was his career before being elected to Congress. I know, he’s married, but his wife lives back in Illinois (like Gary Condit’s wife lived back in Condit’s Congressional district in California). I’m a big supporter of gay rights, but not hypocrisy and lying to one’s own family, not to mention your constituents.
