I know all about the trickle down effect. However I make a decent living and I'm waaay above the minimum wage. I would like to see the minimum wage increased to $9 or higher AND DETERMINED BY THE MARKET by placing some sanity and limitations on the labor supply. (enforcing the border) I could then benefit from the "bubble up effect" and increase my buying power with a higher wage.

In the real world the "free flow of people" includes slavery, white slavery (prostitution), illegal drugs, militant gangs, gridlock, bad drivers, destruction of schools, hospitals, and social programs, and renders any minimum wage meaningless.

All the "free trade" arguments have their own merits although they are just a thin slice of reality. And when I was in school the "free flow of people" was never part of the formula. Sometimes before swallowing what these economists say you gotta "follow the money".

Lots of what I read on this site eg Konop, roberts, rings a bell. I work in the grad school of the Econ Dept of a major Japanese uni, and neoclassical economics (read: math, no body else gets it, except that everything neoliberal is inevitable). People here incl PhDs may be disillusioned in their original reasons for becoming economists (young Japanese, often idealists) ie to improve society, etc. But do you think they'd tell anyone except their expat English teacher? No way. Most go to foreign affiliated financial firms in Tokyo, and carry on with the, by now, same old same old, at the expense of their own and the planet's well-being. Thanks for the posts.... important stuff. Current academic economics isn't all a house of cards, but sure looks like one by the way the mainstream/neoclassists keep trying to find applications for their mind experiments, and exlude any and all debate. see Post-Autistic Economics Review http://www.paecon.net/
