GOP’S prophet of intolerance?

Do you agree with Cynthia Tucker that Falwell was GOP’S prophet of intolerance?

AJC-By the time of his death last week, Jerry Falwell had become a caricature, a victim of his egomania and verbal excesses. The organization he founded in 1979, the Moral Majority, had long since disbanded and his name had become associated with right-wing dogma. He will be remembered as much for his ridiculous pronouncements — such as blaming gays and feminists, among others, for the 9/11 attacks — as for anything else.

Nevertheless, his influence on American politics has, sadly, been profound. He and his fellow theocrats have created a climate of intolerance for diversity, distrust of science and disrespect for the wall of separation between church and state. Thomas Jefferson would weep for the republic he helped to birth.

As soon as you bring up this far left “what leftist planet is she from?” person’s name I cringe.

Sadly her influence on American people has, sadly, been profound.

She is trying to create a climate of socialism. I do agree with her one one point. Thomas Jefferson would weep if he read her articles and realized people believe in her dribble. An he would be horrified that she actually is in control of the editorials. He’d realize that he lost freedom of speach for the most part.

Falwell did a lot of damage but mostly to the GOP. Now they are beholden to his heirs. He was a neocon and was very helpful to them.

    preussow

Does Farwell help or hurt the GOP?

  4. preussow says:

Caroline, I’m no fan of Falwell. To me, he is one of many that hurt religion.

John, both. Helps that he had a following. Hurts that his views are easy targets – even to me.

  5. JohnKonop says:

    I agree!

  6. captain_menace says:

I think it’s safe to say that Cynthia Tucker will burn in hell for her blasphemous article.

We love you Jerry! We’ll carry on your battle against homosexuality, and… er any other social issue that could be construed as sinful. Down with sinners!

  7. preussow says:

Hey Cap, have not seen you around in a while. Love your comment.

Still got to say I’m not a fan of him. While I think there are things he stood for that are good, I also think he went way to far on things.

  8. captain_menace says:

have not seen you around in a while.

Yeah, my pimp has been working me hard the past few weeks. I’m hoping to get a break soon, I’m all worn out.

  9. preussow says:

I just figured that it seems that most of the people seem to have started blogging late today that they either just got home from church or the bar.

From what I’ve seen from many people not really commenting on what the issue is, but just repeating their stance against something/someone without backing it up with facts or personal opions, I may have incorrectly thought you been at the bar all week :-)

  10. captain_menace says:

people not really commenting on what the issue is

    What’s the issue?

  11. preussow says:

Thanks for the softball lob cap. In this case look at the headline “GOP’s prophet of intolerance?”

Anything else you want spelled out?

  12. captain_menace says:

Anything else you want spelled out?

Sure, how can I become a millionaire by working only 4 hours a week, like they show on the TV?

As for the headline… is that really an issue? I think the Reverand Falwell’s history speaks for itself…

“If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.” ~ Rev. Jerry Falwell (RIP)

  13. preussow says:

Captian, do you really read what is posted?

My first response was about Tucker, who I can not stand.

I have stated several tims in this issue, I’m not a fan a him.

I also think he represents what is a ill to America, especailly TV religious leaders or other famouse religious leaders who not only get rich but to try to shape America.

I believe that one has the right to say what they believe, and if you have enough people you can convince, so be it. That captain is how you can become a millionaire and only work 4 hours a week. Btw, how did you come up with that number?

Farwell’s far right views are not even closely related to my Christian views.

Flashback, my first comment was on Tucker and her views of life!

Now that I have spelled it out, do you want me to draw a picture?

  14. captain_menace says:

A picture is worth a thousand words.

You will pay for your hateful views of Falwell (and Tucker for that matter). Leave judging up to the supreme judge (AKA God). Right? Don’t give in to sinning.

As for the 4 hours a week… that’s all the time I have left available after I account for my blogging time, my XBox 360 time, my drunk/high time, my prostituting time… hmmm, I’m forgetting something… oh yes, and my parenting time.

  15. preussow says:

Captain, I did not like Falwell. Period. Reminded me of “religious leaders” who not only profited on gullible people put also tried to shape politics.

Parenting time is more important. The world will end before we know it.

Hope you can mix parenting time with the Xbox while playing games with your kid(s). I really enjoyed playing Playstation games with my daughter, when I did not lose to her, on purpose might I add.

Btw, this is my wt time response.

  16. captain_menace says:

I lied. I don’t have an XBox 360. I have some friends who have an XBox 360. I have a PS2. The only game I play is Guitar Hero II… because I truly am a guitar hero. My kid isn’t big enough to get her fingers around the fretboard, so we play together.

The world will end before we know it.

So, would your expert financial advice be to take on as much unsecured debt as I possibly can and live it up before Jesus visits us again?

And what happens after the 1,000 years of peace that concludes the return of our lord and savior? I’ve always wondered about that. Does the earth just stop spinning or something?

I think I figured out that wt means “work time”. Am I right? Do I win a prize?

  17. She’s off on this one…he was America’s Prophet of Intollerance

Necessary to let bigots off the hook who still want to feel like they’re good people.

  18. David O'Rear says:

    preussow,

If Cynthia Tucker is “trying to create a climate of socialism,” Jerry Falwell was trying for fundamentalist fascism.

Calling Falwell a neocon is much, much too polite (both to Mr Falwell and to neocons).

    .

In answer to Mr Konop’s question, the fact that Mr Falwell is no longer a factor in American politics helps America, GOP or not.

    .

    captain_menace . . . nice lifestyle!

  19. Mike says:

Al,glad you brought up bigot and for all you who believe big business is behind open borders. Look who Hillary hired to cochair her presidential campaign one Raul Yzaguirre who was from 1974 to 2004, served as President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza, an organization that:

    · views the United States as an irredeemably racist nation
    · favors racial and ethnic preferences for minorities in the workplace and in higher education supports open borders and amnesty for all illegal aliens

    · supports open borders and amnesty for all illegal aliens
La Raza also supports the takeover of the Southwest.
La Raza is also heavily into gangs in CA. Often targeting blacks and whites who live in or around Hispanic communities.
His views of minorities goes no further then the Hispanic community.

  20. hoads says:

Jerry Falwell was made a caricature by the liberal media in their effort to debase and distort his contributions to combating full throttle leftism that had railroaded American politics until he founded the Moral Majority. I did not always support his “brimstone hellfire” methods but, I do credit him with rallying otherwise apolitical religious groups to interject their voices into American politics.

  21. Bill says:

I don’t know about his views specifically but there’s some credibility to the argument that some of these Christian political groups have had the effect of neutralizing and co-opting conservatives AND Christians. A cheap way for people to send in their money instead of really getting involved, as well as incorporating religious overtones and undertones to practically every argument. It tends to creep out some people.

  22. Bill says:

And I don’t think Christians are required to run every single idea through the “Bible filter” or that the bible needs to be applied to each and every political position.

  23. David O'Rear says:

If you look at the way the GOPers behave, there is no role for the principles of the Bible in any part of life.

Not in politics, not in public administration and certainly not in one’s private life.

Oh, unless you’re female, in which case you have the same rights as you did 2,000 years ago.

  24. Mad Dog says:

Falwell and Newt Gingrich shared a common goal: Conversion of every ‘American’ to Falwell’s church.

Read Gingrich’s lastest comments at Liberty University delivered just after Falwell died.

Gingrich even said the purpose of Liberty was the conversion of everyone in America.

    What a toady.
