Huckabee GOP Latest Star Bashes China

Do you think Huckabee is surging due to his populist message on trade and immigration?

Iowa-Governor Huckabee is a supporter of free trade, but our trade policy is not free because it is not fair. In regards to China, Huckabee would want to see that country start to adopt similar safety, health, labor, and environmental standards that we have in this country. They are basically on a different playing field, and because they can skirt standards that we have to live by, they can exploit those differences and produce cheaper products.

Governor Huckabee is also a support of Country of Origin Labeling, or COOL, for food products. This is especially important in light of contaminated feed and food products brought in from China.

Democratic activist David Sirota has a long article about Huckabee which he concludes by saying: …when I take off my partisan hat and speak just as an economic progressive, I have to admit I think it’s a pretty good sign that one Republican candidate is at least talking about these core economic issues (even if he’s only just talking about them). It means that whether the elite Washington media ignores it or not, economic populism may end up taking center stage in both party’s primaries – and that’s a good thing. For too long, we’ve had a political debate in this country that seeks to avoid – rather than confront – the kitchen table economic issues that ordinary Americans face every day. Here’s hoping Huckabee’s rhetoric means that’s changing.

Huckabee on the War on Drugs:

Instead, [Huckabee] campaigns on a compassionate approach to wrongdoers, especially those whose crimes are the result of drug or alcohol addiction. At Philly’s Finest, he condemned the “revenge-based corrections system,” sounding every bit the sort of squishy liberal that the Bill O’Reillys of the world long ago scared into the shadows. “We lock up a lot of people we are mad at rather than the ones we are really afraid of,” he said. “We incarcerate more people than anybody on earth.” As governor, Huckabee pushed for drug treatment instead of incarceration for non-violent offenders. He pushed for faith-based prison programs, and was critical of governors who “gladly pull the switch” on death penalty cases, an apparent knock on President Bush, who was criticized as governor of Texas for being cavalier about capital punishment.

…he also calls the “three-strikes” law “the dumbest piece of public-policy legislation in a long time” and argues that “We don’t have a massive crime problem; we have a massive drug problem. And you don’t treat that by locking drug addicts up.”

And China will tell him to piss up a rope and he couldn’t say boo. China can rape our currency and sell their trinkets to India or themselves. China holds all the cards here because we float our prosperity on debt.

The guy is from Hope, Arkansas. (YIKES!!!)

  5. bb says:

Wait, timeout. You are referencing a ‘South Iowa’ blogger as the credible source for this thread. Come on John…the guy doesn’t even quote Huckabee, he paraphrases with his own personal opinions injected. He conducted the ‘interview’ while driving home…

What next, Ariana Huffington (never mind, you have referenced her blog already as a reliable source).

    Bart

If Huckabee did say that is he a liberal in your view?

  7. bb says:

Club for Growth reviewed Huckabee’s record as governor and found it to be liberal relative to tax and spend policies. No ifs about it.

I like Huckabee. He would make a great senatorial candidate against Mark Pryor.

  8. David O'Rear says:

Protectionism, at heart, is anti-poor. The less one has, the less one can afford to pay more than the going market-clearing price.

Protectionism is anti-poor in “protecting” countries, and even more anti-poor in countries suffering from other’s protectionism.

  9. Bill says:

“Bashing China” ain’t good for the U S of A these days.

  10. LeftHook says:

David: Low prices is just a partial answer. As usual, you ignore unfair trade’s wage depressing effect.

  11. captain_menace says:

    can rape our currency

Can you really rape the willing?

  12. David O'Rear says:

    LeftHook,

What portion of the people benefit from low(er) prices? Pick a number, any number, just so long as it is above 75%.

What portion of the people benefit from a manufacturing job? Pick again, anything you like, just so long as it is below 25%.

    Compare the two.
