McCain campaign calls Drudge report about lobbyist story a ’smear’

Do you trust McCain or Drudge?

USATODAY-”I’ve never done any favors for anybody — lobbyist or special interest group — that’s a clear, 24-year record,” Republican presidential candidate John McCain said a short time ago in Detroit.

The Arizona senator was responding to this posting at the Drudge Report, which alleges that The New York Times has been working on a story about whether he gave some sort of special treatment to a telecommunications industry lobbyist.

Drudge goes on to say that McCain and his campaign aides have been pressuring the Times not to run such a story. McCain said this about that part of the Drudge report: “I have not been in talks with The New York Times. They’ve been communicating with our staff and with us.”

McCain campaign communications director Jill Hazelbaker also sent this e-mail to reporters:

“It is unfortunate that rumor and gossip enter into political campaigns. John McCain has a 24-year record of serving this country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the important issues facing our country.

“Americans are sick and tired of this kind of gutter politics. John McCain is the most experienced and prepared to lead as commander and chief, and he will continue to run a positive campaign on the issues.”

I hope this story sinks McCain (and any Democrat they can hang it on). In the long run, it’s the best thing that could happen to this country.

Make these congressional sell-outs think twice about selling government policy to the highest bidder. Finally some consequences beyond financial gain.

If Drudge is contradicting that, I believe Drudge. Gimmie a break.

McCain will go down in history as one of the Keating Five. Anyone remember the S&L scandal that Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer had to pick up the bill for?

    I’ll take Drudge, thank you.
