McCain, Obama spar on GI bill

Did McCain go to far? Why is McCain against this bill?

YAHOO– Republican John McCain said Thursday that Democrat Barack Obama had no right to criticize McCain’s position on military scholarships because the Illinois senator did not serve in uniform.

“And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did,” the Arizona senator said in a harshly worded statement issued Thursday.

McCain lashed out at Obama’s personal history despite Obama’s repeated praise of McCain’s military service. As Obama said Tuesday night in Des Moines, Iowa: “We face an opponent, John McCain, who arrived in Washington nearly three decades ago as a Vietnam War hero, and earned an admirable reputation for straight talk and occasional independence from his party.”

I got over $50k and that was in ‘96. I’ve heard of soldiers that have gotten much, much more in recent years. Please tell me why our troops need even more?

I really wouldn’t mind the increase if they increased the standards for enlistment and re-enlistment.

Why not increase the pay, though, instead of college incentives? Increase the pay to the point that the military is the best job a high school or college grad can get AND THEN pick only the best.

Better soldiers means that we need less of them and incidents like Abu Ghariab won’t happen because we won’t have need of punk kids in our armed services.

McCain is right, though, that enlistees will serve one term for the sake of the college benefits and hid the road. Like I said, increase the pay and everyone will want in.
