I got over $50k and that was in '96. I've heard of soldiers that have gotten much, much more in recent years. Please tell me why our troops need even more?

I really wouldn't mind the increase if they increased the standards for enlistment and re-enlistment.

Why not increase the pay, though, instead of college incentives? Increase the pay to the point that the military is the best job a high school or college grad can get AND THEN pick only the best.

Better soldiers means that we need less of them and incidents like Abu Ghariab won't happen because we won't have need of punk kids in our armed services.

McCain is right, though, that enlistees will serve one term for the sake of the college benefits and hid the road. Like I said, increase the pay and everyone will want in.
