Republican candidates begin snubbing Bush
Can a GOP candidate win in a general election with Bush pulling him down? How would you deal with the Bush problem if you were running?
Politico-A president with dismal approval ratings and a bitter intraparty rupture over immigration are obvious problems for Republican politicians.
In recent days, however, the combination is emerging as something less obvious: an opportunity.
Recent polls have shown Bush’s popularity — which has long been in the tank with independents — suffering significant erosion even among GOP base voters, largely due to a backlash over the president’s stance on immigration.

John – That’s a great question with a simple answer. People respect principled leaders. George the Younger promised us one thing and gave us something else. That, my friend, is unprincipled leadership to the “Nth” degree.
Here’s how to fix the problem if you’re a candidate; please take notes and you can use this during your upcoming Senate bid….
1. Remind the voters about the Education Bill Bush signed. At the time that was the most expensive piece of spending legislation ever signed into law…….next….
2. Remind the voters he actually out spent himself on prescription drug legislation! Our great, great, great grandchildren will still be paying for this if the Country can survive the burden…now….
3. Talk about the Harriet Miers debacle. This is the same guy who promised to nominate “originalists” to the Supreme Court! Fortunately for all of us, we were able to stifle that nomination before we had another Sandra Day O’Connor moment……finally….just when you thought he couldn’t get more left-leaning and it was safe to go back in the water…………………..
4. He ignored his staunchest supporters by trying to ram this ludicrous amnesty legislation down our collective throat! It’s a good thing he’s only got a year or so left. I’m not sure we “neo-cons” could handle much more of his “compassionate conservatism.”
Here are Mac’s Five Commandments for a candidate;
1.Thou shalt tell the People the truth about what you plan to do if elected. Either they’ll elect you or they won’t, but you stuck to your principles. Integrity is a politician’s bread and butter. Unfortunately most of our current group never learned that maxim.
2. If elected, Thou MUST DO WHAT YOU SAID you’d do! Understanding that compromises are necessary, NEVER compromise on your principles.
3. Thou Shalt Avoid “double-speak” at all cost. Talk to the voters so they understand the issues.
4. If elected, thou shalt keep your constituents informed of your accomplishments and failures. They’ll applaud the accomplishments and respect your honesty where failure is concerned.
5. Thou shaly never, ever, ever, go back on a campaign pledge even if it means you jeopardize your chance at re-election. This is precisely why our current bunch are in such deep trouble.
Well, there it is….rules to live by as an elected representaive of the People.
John Konop for U.S. Senate – It’s time for a change!
I think the president is a political flatliner after this immigration bill fiasco!!! I don’t know of one conservative that supports him anymore. There’s probably a couple somewhere. But I havn’t met them.
If the wrong person wins the nomination and Republicans think they are getting another “Bush” it won’t matter what his policies are.
The remaining 25% in the party will mostly stay home and that means a lot Congressmen that are in close districts will lose if they do stay home.
This isn’t just about losing the Presidency. We could lose Congress to a very “liberal” Democratic majority that would be so large that they would no longer have to worry about a 40 vote filibuster.
But, the right candidate and Bloomberg running as a independent might hurt the Democrats more than the Republicans. Even if by some miracle he pulled it off, the people coming out the vote in Congressional races could help the GOP in close races.
It might cause one of the largest voter turnouts in history.
Too late. Giuliani has already said “Thank God George W. Bush is President.” After 7 years of clinging to him, they aren’t going to be able to wipe the stench off that easily.
