SHOULD BUSH CLOSE GITMO?

ABCNEWS-President Bush will soon decide whether to close Guantanamo Bay as a prison for al-Qaeda suspects, sources tell ABC News. High-level discussions among top advisers have escalated in the past week, with the most senior administration officials in continuous talks about the future of the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay–and how it will be dramatically changed and/or closed in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling that gave detainees there access to federal courts.

Sources have confirmed that President Bush is expected to be briefed on these pressing GTMO issues–and may reach a decision on the future of the naval base as a prison for al Qaeda suspects–before he leaves for the G8 on Saturday. An announcement, however, is not expected before he leaves the country.

High-level administration officials say the Court’s decision dramatically changes the legal landscape–and raises questions about whether the government has solid evidence to present to federal judges to justify ongoing detentions.

    I’m of two minds.

On the one hand, it is the heart of terrible human rights abuses that directly violate the Constitution and are solid grounds for impeachment.

On the other hand, we need the evidence for the trial of Dubious and Co, and may need the facilities for their incarceration.

  2. hoads says:

Sure, Bush needs to close Guantanamo since it purpose has been gutted by the Supreme Court. White House lawyers need to surmise the loopholes available to them to continue to detain insurgents intent on jeopardizing U.S. security so that American taxpayers are not on the hook for the fees of activists lawyers who want to hog-tie the U.S. military efforts by any means necessary even it results in an increase in terrorists activity here and throughout the world.

Where do we hold the terrorists if not GITMO? Maybe the old jail in Cherokee County…I’m sure noboby will object….

I thought the “Koran in the toilet” and the German Shepherds and other humiliation was supposed to “soften ‘em up” so they could be released back into the world as “kinder gentler Muslims”. Or maybe some stupid fools actually thought they would find Jesus after this.

    It’s called “due process” hoads.

You had better hope no one ever labels you a “terrorist”.

bb, why not just keep them captive in Georgia? You and your fellow patriots down there will do the guard work for free, right?
