The “Culture of the Drunk” Migrates Northward
Texas and other border states have suffered as a result of illegal immigration for years. And we’ve received zero help from the northern states until some of that pain and suffering began to “migrate” north into their backyards and have a negative effect upon them. But that’s what we’ve learned to expect from the more self-centered segment of our U.S. population in the north/northeast. Ha! And so now it seems that they are on board with us and, hey, better late than never. Welcome aboard! We luv ya!
So now that most of the nation is on the same page, as the polls show, it might help solidify and unify our efforts if we break it down a bit. Analyze the problem. Actually there is a myriad of categories under the heading “Illegal Immigration Problem”. ( link ) One category that has been in the national news lately has been that of drunken illegals driving and killing U.S. citizens. You have the “Geraldo Riveras’” of the world saying that it is “irrelevant” that the perpetrator is illegal and that it could have just as easily been a drunken legal resident or citizen. Not so fast Geraldo. MADD says your wrong. I think they’ve done a few studies on the subject and know a bit more than Geraldo. (which isn’t saying much) MADD says just the opposite. Something that we, here in Texas, have known for decades. And that is, along with the illegal immigrants came their “drinking culture”. And we’re talking mostly the men folk here where drinking to excess is considered machismo or something like that. And according to the MADD study, conducted by the Alcohol Policy Group, drinking in Mexico can start at the tender age of 12 (or younger) and is considered a “rite of passage”. And get this – in Mexico there are 2 “Drunk Drivers Nights” per year! Christmas and New Years where its “hands off” of all drunk drivers by the authorities. Can you imagine this? It’d be fun to get on the roof of a sturdy building and watch the destruction derby below. But this fabulous MADD study clearly shows that the instance of drunk driving is lopsided in favor of Hispanics and apparently/specifically those from south of the border.
So the question begs to be answered. Can the surge in dui/drunk driving incidences be directly attributed to the increase of illegal immigrants streaming across our southern border? Seems a fairly easy question to answer. Huhmm? Darvin Dowdy

What does your desire to have 2% Ron Paul come to Georgia have to do with drunk illegal immigrants?

These Ron Paul fanatics continue to hurt their own candidate, who I like by the way, even though I’m a Hunter supporter. This kind of lunacy is a huge turn off. I hope they realize soon what damage their doing to Cong. Paul’s campaign. DD

Linda,
Great post. Thanks for doing all that you do and just ignore the Neo-Cons!
August 26th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
This is a deeply shameful post. Why do you take such pleasure in demonizing another people? Mexicans are drunkards, diseased, murderers, bad drivers, stupid, criminal, and in general a lower order of human being—that about right? Why do you need to hold and promote these kinds of un-Christian beliefs to get yourself through the day?
There are plenty of real reasons to desire immigration reform, most of them economic. People like this poster invite the racism charges that set those reform efforts back and make it easier for the cheap labor lobbyists to work over our middle class. Nice job.

How odd Derwin blames the northern states for the porous border in Texas. Texas is now a minority majority of Hispanic/Latino, isn’t it.
And Texas is as red a state as is any southern former slave state, isn’t it?
Ron Paul didn’t do anything to stop the neo-con’s version of the Mongol hordes, did he?
Nor did Bush as Governor of Texas, did he?
Nor did that corrupt Tom Delay, did he?
Nor is Ah-nold in Californicate, is he?
Seems none of the GOP corporate champions did anything to slow the flow of very cheap labor, did they?
But, the real villians were always the northern states. Not any of the border states…
Thanks very much, Derwin, for accepting the blame on behave of the vast number of Americans.

Darvin Dowdy,
Can you just remind me (my memory is terrible) how many years it was between Texas and other border states exploiting blacks – and not just out-right slavery – and those same states woke up to find the shoe is on the other foot now? 20 years? Less?
Gosh, that’s tough. Of course, if you’re asking Northern states for help you must be doing it with a clean, reparations-paid-in-full conscious, right? I mean, it just wouldn’t make any sense at all to be denouncing your own behavior without having made amends for it, right?

Apparently, the pro-illegal groups realize that Latinos have a serious problem as well as acceptance of drunk driving. Why else would the ethnocentric groups publish this type of material? Only, they are only concerned with the death of the drunks:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-04-10-hispanic-dui_N.htm
“Nationally, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Hispanics age 1-34 but only the eighth leading cause for Americans overall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Other federal data show that 47% of Hispanic crash deaths are alcohol-related, compared with 40% for the general population.”

Okay, let’s continue our crackdown on drunk driving AND deport any illegal caught drunk driving. Why should we allow illegals to contribute to our problem? If you want to come here and work then stay under the radar and follow the rules. If you’re incapable of doing that, you don’t belong here because you are a “guest” in this country and should be more than willing to follow our rules. Those that break the law are a menace and a burden to our justice system not to mention a danger on our roads that contributes to American deaths that might not have occurred if you, the illegal alien, had not broken the law.

David,
When the immigrants finally start to adapt to U.S. cultural norms, like drinking and driving, gangs, and domestic violence who are the people most offended?

Gene,
Have you never heard of the concept of a designated driver? That is the reason why citizens have a much lower incidence of drunken driving. And Athens has an intense police presence, and the college kids party in their rooms/doors/apartments and stay the night so they leave sober. Have first hand experience - my son graduated from UGA with a clean driving record and a degree.
I have also been to Mexico, it was a lawless country in the 70’s and remains so. No big surprise when Mexican nationals sneak in that they continue to break other laws - stealing social security numbers, claiming dependents who do not exist, drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident, spousal abuse, child sexual abuse, and aiding and abetting drug and people smuggling if not directly participating in these.
And, Mad Dog, the gang MS 13 originated in El Salvador, brought here by illegals and flourishes with their anchor babies. Drinking and driving are not the U.S. cultural norms, just the leftist Hollywood types. As far as the gangs and domestic violence, mainly perpetuated by the poor in slums. Which is why we should not be importing poverty from third world countries. Maybe there are gangs in the Hamptons and Palm Beach I have not heard about?

Ga pat, I’m glad for you & yer son.
The fact of the matter is though, you all wanna stereotype folks.
Lemme ax you: “Athens has an intense police presence” because of wha???
“we have designated drivers “ because of wha???
so instead of saying we have forced people to adapt our drinking culture as to not cause public harm. . . you would rather make it seem as though Hispanics are drunks and can’t ammend their ways.
THEN you further attach that stereotype to the seperate problem of illegals.
If I rob banks AND can’t tie my shoes, should you warn all the children that if they don’t learn to tie their shoes, they will wind up as bank robbers.

Designated drivers are common because people who had delayed gratification, waited until they were educated and employed making enough money BEFORE they had children, and possess PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for themselves and their families are not willing to risk it all in order for a good time bar hopping.
Insofar as the stereotyping, if the shoe fits Cinderfella . . . .
I remember being at Sam’s Club the afternoon of New Year’s eve, and there were massive numbers of Hispanics buying cases of beer piled on hand trucks. I still remember that scene, especially since a young Sheriff’s deputy was killed by a drunken illegal New Year’s eve (and it was not his first offense). They were able to identify him and his passenger only by the car he left behind after they ran off and left the deputy to die in a ditch alone.
So, my husband was mowed down by an illegal without a license who also ran away from the scene. He not only left the car but his wife and baby in it. Wife? Age 17, baby age 2. Insurance does not cover unlicensed drivers. So we will gladly take your contributions toward the money we had to shell out to repair our fairly new Cadillac if you want to end the stereotyping of the hit and run illegal.
Intense police presence in Athens - they cut those college kids no breaks. Have to, they are immature and off on their own for the first time and quickly learn to be responsible. Or their school and possibly future employment careers are blemished. They do not get a ticket that they can just ignore - they are citizens, remember? They have ID’s and valid licenses and can be traced, put in jail, etc. Illegals get a free pass.
The one who hit us did not even get a fine for leaving the scene of an accident, only a ticket for following too close and for not having a license, and they were modest at that. What would happen to me if I tried that in Mexico, even if I was in the country legally as a tourist?
There is a correlation between people who drink and drive and alcohol related crashes. There is no relation between tying your shoes and the act of bank holdups. In fact, the Hispanic organizations admit that drinking and driving is part of their culture. They just didn’t take it to the next level - you know, where the relaxed drunk mows down innocent citizens and then runs away. They seem to survive the crash to kill again.
Ask Billy Inman if he agrees with you, or Loren Lilly’s widow.

Hey if we just backed off the illegals then they wouldn’t be so scared and have to drink all the time. And the issue of stats was brought up by one of the other bloggers f.y.i.
